Islanders set for a good fantasy season in 2016-17?

The New York Islanders had a season to remember in 2015-16. They swept their city rivers the new York Rangers, and they made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Their season came to an end when they lost that second round series to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Looking at them in terms of fantasy, it looks like John Tavares is the team's best bet.

Tavares had a down season by his standards with 70 points (33 goals, 37 assists), including 19 power-play points, but that doesn't make him any less valuable in fantasy. In 2014-15, Tavares had a career-high 86 points (38 goals, 48 assists), finishing second in the League (one behind Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars) and was a Hart Trophy nominee for the second time in his career. Tavares has had at least 24 goals in each of his seven NHL seasons and hasn't had fewer than 54 points during a full season. He has stayed healthy, playing a full season four times and missing four games or fewer two other times.

Although his linemates continue to be a revolving door, several things are clear: Tavares will be the Islanders top-line center and should score between 30-35 goals with upwards of 75 points, and likely will score more than the seven power-play goals he had last season, which tied his career low. He may not be worth drafting in the top five forwards, but is a virtual lock to go among the top 10 at his position.

But in terms of undervalue, the newcomer on the team, Andrew Ladd seems like a good fantasy fit. Ladd had 25 goals last season with the Winnipeg Jets and Chicago Blackhawks, and has scored at least 23 in each of the past five full NHL seasons. In 2014-15, he had a career-high 62 points (24 goals, 38 assists) with 72 penalty minutes, and was plus-9 with 19 power-play points, six game-winning goals and 224 shots on goal, proving his worth in category coverage across the board.

Let's take a look at their goalies.

Thomas Greiss outperformed Jaroslav Halak and is the better fantasy option, although coach Jack Capuano often rotates his goalies even if one is playing well. Greiss had NHL career highs in starts (38), wins (23) and save percentage (.925; ranked third in the League), and had a 2.36 GAA.

In 25 of his 41 appearances, Greiss, 29, allowed two goals or fewer, and only allowed more than three goals three times, compared to Halak, who appeared in 36 games, allowing two or fewer goals 21 times and four or more six times.

Halak, 31, is coming off an injury-plagued season, going 18-13-4 with a 2.30 GAA and .919 save percentage, one season after setting the Islanders single-season record with 38 wins.

Fantasy: Top 200 overall rankings for August

Even in the middle of summer, fantasy hockey developments keep on coming. And things will continue to change in August as we inch closer to NHL training camps and the World Cup of Hockey 2016 in September.

The New York Rangers made news in late July by acquiring center Mika Zibanejad in a trade that sent center Derick Brassard to the Ottawa Senators. Brassard, who was ranked 59th based on standard-league performance last season, had 40 power-play points in the past two seasons and looks to be Ottawa's No. 1 center, bumping Kyle Turris just outside the top 200. Viable wings Mike Hoffman, Mark Stone and/or Bobby Ryancould see production spikes at even strength and/or on the power play playing with Brassard.

Zibanejad finished 167th last season in Yahoo rankings but enters the top 130 based on potential after going to the Rangers, where he should play top-six minutes and challenge for a spot on their first power-play unit, which has a void with the departure of Brassard and defensemanKeith Yandle (to the Florida Panthers). Zibanejad is an underrated playmaker who has improved his points total in each of his NHL seasons and carries sleeper potential after a 51-point, 184 shot-on-goal season. The 23-year-old is a potential fresh linemate for Rick Nash, Chris Kreider and/or Mats Zuccarello, who each produced at a high level in the past.

Another recent fantasy development is the return of 39-year-old forward Shane Doan, who quietly finished 60th among all players last season for the Arizona Coyotes and is one of the most underrated multicategory cogs in the game. He signed a one-year contract and should remain relevant as the Coyotes shift to their young nucleus of forwards Max Domi, Anthony Duclair and prospect Dylan Strome, who's expected to push for a roster spot. Strome, along with Jesse Puljujarvi of the Edmonton Oilers, are among the rookie forwards who will be drafted much later than Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Patrik Laine(Winnipeg Jets) on average but have high fantasy upside.

So, after an eventful July, here's an updated look at the top 200 fantasy player rankings for this season. Value has been quantified based on past production trends, potential line combinations, power-play usage, team goalie situations, injury history, bounce-back or breakout upside, projected regression, age, and contract status (remaining restricted free agents are noted below). This list will be updated again with fantasy-relevant news leading up to training camps.

Also, NHL.com will examine each team's fantasy outlook in its 30 Teams in 30 Days series during August.

NOTE: Standard Yahoo categories include goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points and shots on goal for skaters, and wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts for goalies.
